Royal Jones and his brilliantly talented team of funksters are obviously having musical as well as lyrical fun, moving from the snappy, playful jazz/funk of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" to the smoky piano lounge feel of "Echo." The one suggestion I would make for the next album is that the vocals do need to be turned up a little � the voice does get a little overpowered by the instrumentation. However, the sass still comes through. The moods may change, but the attitude-laden yet fun vibe still infuses every song like the smoke from a well-rolled � um, never mind.

Yes, the strangely soulful falsetto of Royal Jones really does come from a middle-aged, blue-eyed, white guy. Think Nina Simone mixed with Mick Hucknall. In fact, much of the well-produced "You Broke the Circle" sounds like "A New Flame"-era Simply Red, especially on "Epiphany." .... he's a man doing his own thing, modern tastes and musical fads be damned.

You need to fling yourself down the rabbit hole to prepare for this one. Why? Three words: Rick Astley Syndrome. Remember hearing "Never Gonna Give You Up" back in the 80s and thinking "Luther Vandross," and then turning on MTV and thinking "Good Lord, someone gave Howdy Doody a recording contract"? Well, this collection of stream-of-consciousness Motown dance hip-hop comes to you courtesy of a guy who looks like he's here to fix the refrigerator. Actually, going strictly by the CD cover, he looks more like someone who's about to hurl himself off a subway platform. Cheer up, Mr. Jones, you've made a great CD.

This CD has one of the most credible street vibes I've heard in a long time. This man leads a colorful life. He opens the CD with "Sylvia of Boston," a morning-after voice mail message from someone who's been rode hard and put up wet. Then the music kicks in. Brace yourself. We're going underground and experiencing what made Sylvia sound that way.

You Broke The Circle is a trip through dance clubs and time itself -- on "Echo," we fade into old-fashioned dance hall cha-cha-cha. On "Confused," Jones gets so incredibly Motown, I could swear I'm listening to Gladys Knight and the Pips. And I really mean Gladys Knight. Jones sings like a Motown queen. I could have sworn this was a female singer if it weren't for the occasional dip into bass territory.

My favorite track is "Ride Out of Control," a tribute to 70s funk, complete with a horn section and lazy, drawling rapping. The hook is the refrain, "If I ever come down, I'll behave, I'll be good." I can easily imagine Chef from South Park taking on this one. Somebody get me Matt and Trey.

The bottom line is that you will move to this. Yes, it's sample-happy and completely synthesized, but it's bursting with soul. Make it your soundtrack for a Saturday night and see if you don't sound like Sylvia from Boston the next morning.

What would you do if you were blessed with a four octave vocal range? Royal Jones uses his to make some of the most off kilter, unique, and fractured funk and soul songs around. He cites Martha Reeves as a big influence and his vocals show an obsession with soul divas, but the New York City vibe of his music is light years away from the Motown Sound. It's electronic funk music for dancing in the clubs, but possessed of a chilled out ghostliness at times that makes you wonder who let the trip-hop in the door.

Skip the intro cut and head straight for the title cut and you're quickly swept up in a weird world that's like a kissing cousin to the stuff that Antony & The Johnsons are doing. "Echo" has a sort of creepy bossa nova ambience perfect for this post-modern film noir world. I dig the guitar riff on "Ride Out Of Control" which sounds like it could have been sampled from a Sly And The Family Stone album even if the spoken lyrics are pretty silly. I hope silliness is the point of the song, "Pain Stain" with its paranoid diva shtick reminiscent of dancier Frank Zappa grooves. Royal Jones manages to sound like Asha Puti on "Love Like A Freak", but I will admit that by the time this 9th song on the 11 song CD played I was beginning to get a little tired of his four octaves.

A little Royal Jones goes a long way. You Broke The Circle on MBIBE Records is well worth getting if you're into strange dance music, but I Royal Jones would really shine and stand out if he started putting out 12 inch records. Temas como "Confussed" dejan el poso a sabor Curtis Mayfield, ese sonido tan caracter�stico, ese funky meloso que s�lo pod�a salir de la cabeza de aquel genio, aqu� parece homenajeado, a destacar la increible producci�n de Codee, mucha clase.
Mientras que en "Pain stain" crece con la concepci�n musical m�s TTD, si bien Royal Jones consigue un ambiente mucho m�s evocador y relantizado.

"Beware" huele a cl�sico por los cuatro costados, desde los ritmos de la bater�a, los coros negros y las guitarras preciosistas, dejan los samplers aparcados y ofrecen toda la realidad de una gran banda soul.

Otro tema destacable es "Reality (play loud)", el artista se embarca en un viaje soul alucinogeno simplemente para demostrarnos sus capacidades vocales, africanismo y oscuridad en un ambiente amenazador.

Royal Jones ha creado con "You broke the circle" un �lbum original, rico en matices soul y con mucho gancho, sin duda es una gran diva, ya lo ha conseguido.

Art Course in Bagnolet (Bagnolet, Paris)

I am teaching art from October 7th to June of 2009. The course touches on abstract watercolour work on paper and realist drawing.

The workshops take place in Bagnolet, Paris. Near the metro, porte de Bagnolet, one of the main gates that opened up the walls which originally surrounded Paris.

Incorporating these seemingly contradictory elements into the one course is for people who don't necessarily want to be artists so much as they wish to begin to see differently and become more creative.

The course is designed to be relaxing and challenging at the same time. It ultimately involves exercises to activate the creative side of the brain and teach the eye to see. Decent drawing is a by product of the process.

If you are interested in signing up, the course will be over 3 semisters, starting in October 2008. It will be on each Tuesday evening from 7.30pm till 9pm, close to the Porte de Bagnolet metro. Bagnolet is a truely artistic area with many ateliers in the area of the workshop.

A well known Paris artist has 20,000 sq feet of incredible exhibition space that is being transformed into a modern playground for artists. Assistance is needed to set this up. You would receive credit and be involved with a dynamic fun bunch of people and extraordinarily interesting artists. You would be hands-on and learn a great deal and be part of Nuit Blanche Art Festival here in Paris. English speaking is great and encouraged and french speaking is ok but not necessary. There are also artists from NY on this project.
Nuit Blanche is October 4th.

Gorgeous Live/Work art studios available for American art students
under 30 years old in the 14th arrondisement from Sept.1 and Oct. 1,
2008.

Studios have between 20 and 25 m2 of floor space repartitioned between
a main floor (studio space) and a loft (living space) and include a
large north-facing skylight, a sink, a bed and closet. Linens are
provided and changed every two weeks. Bathrooms, Showers, and Kitchens
are shared on each hallway. No Pets. Studios are on the 5th floor and
elevator accessible.

The rent is 445 Euros per month*, due at the beginning of each month.
This includes water, electricity, and wifi. First and last month's
rent must be paid in the first month. *Tenants are qualified to
receive CAF rent assistance from the French government (about 100
Euros per month), bringing the real cost to around 350 Euros per
month.

These studios are only available American artists under the age of 30
able to prove enrollment in an art (including design, architecture,
film) study program in Paris (i.e. Beaux-Arts, ENSAD, Parsons,
University of Paris-Art Major, American University- Art Major, etc.).
The studios are located in the Fondation des Etats-Unis, 15, boulevard
Jourdan, 75014 Paris.

I am looking for a stage-quality projector to do a video presentation on a wall during a private concert the evening of September 19 in the 20th Arr. at an independent art/theatre space.

This will be a VJ-type performance/projection to compliment a dubstep/downtempo set, and we will connect it with a MacBook. As an artist without a lot of money, I can only offer a small monetary compensation, an invitation to the gig for 2-3 people, and (of course) all kinds of free drinks for the night.

I'm looking for models to photograph on their sofas or beds. Models must be comfortable with posing in their underwear, nudity or partial nudity is an option but would be done with extreme taste. This will be a TFCD shoot. I'll be searching models for this series in Paris during the course of September before continuing in NYC in October. Previous modelling experience is a plus but not particularly necessary. The end product is a series of around 20 strong exhibition quality images to expose here in Paris and also NYC.
